10/17/05....The LCYC Fall Annual meeting was held on Saturday at the conclusion of a rather cool, soggy workday.   At the meeting, the proposed Bylaws change to create a 14th Board member responsible for Boating/Cruising programs was approved.   In addition, the nominees for Commodore (Charlie Lord), Board of Governors (Dot Hill, Don Rathbone, Steve Booth, Ted Lattrell and John O'Rourke), Treasurer (Steve Walkerman) and Auditors (Don O/Brien, Greg Doremus, Peter Phillips) were all elected unanimously.   Congratulations and thanks to these folks for volunteering to serve the club in this way.  Lastly, thanks to all of those who came out for workday and especially the hardy ones who stuck it out until the end.    As usual, St. Pierre's chili and cornbread was worth waiting for. P.S.   There are still some jobs left to do (including the removal of the awnings if we ever get a dry spell), so contact Gene Cloutier (workday coordinator) or Bob Turnau (House chair) if you missed workday and can help out.

DINSE” will help us remember John's many contributions to the club, most notable of which the driving force in the purchase of the land which we all hold so dearly today and past commodore. It’s an honor to place his name on the transom for all to think about as the saga of the club moves on. While the name will go on shortly, there will be a short naming ceremony coming in the fall when all the folks involved can be brought together at the club.

7/18/05....The second running of the LCYC Finn Regatta was held in near perfect conditions at LCYC on July 16-17 with 14 boats participating.  Participants came from Montreal, Ottawa, Massachusetts and New York.  Winds for the first day were 5-10 knots, and the second day's winds were 10-15 with an occasional higher gust.  The 14-boat fleet fit in seven races, four the first day and three the second.  Although the top two boats were well out from the rest of the fleet in total points, only three points separated 3rd place from 6th place, with LCYC's Dave Powlison finishing sixth.  LCYC's Rick Howell also participated, finishing 10th.  The fleet enjoyed a catered dinner on Saturday night, and to maximize racing time, lunches were served on the water each day. Special thanks go to PRO Bob Goodwin, who was assisted over the course of the two-day event by Hal Greig, Bette Reuter, Ernie Reuter, Meredith Powlison, Alec Antel, John Kwiatkowski, Brad Harris and Patrick Healy.  Denny Bowen helped coordinate the Saturday dinner, provided by St. Pierre's catering, and Lisa Powlison dealt with the on-the-water lunch arrangements.  We received excellent feedback from competitors on every aspect of the event.

7/13/05....LCYC's junior sailors Meredith Powlison and Kate Weaver finished 5th in the NSA Bemis Championship, held in Kennebunkport, ME on July 11.  Although the top two teams clearly dominated the fleet, the next three places were close, with Meredith and Kate just three points out of third.  The top three teams advanced to the Area A Bemis Championship, to be held later in July in Marblehead, MA.

The event was held in 420 dinghies, in sheltered water, but in winds that averaged in the high teens with occasional gusts to around 25.  Meredith and Kate's best finishes in the 7-race series were a second and a pair of thirds.  They were one of two all-girl teams participating in the event.  The other team finished 8th.  Meredith and Kate qualified for this event by finishing second in the NSA West Bemis Championship.

Many Club members who do only the official LCYC Workday miss out on a lot of fun working with other club members to make sure everything actually gets done to get the club rolling. These photos show club members, who on Saturday, May 7th, installed the club's awnings and rewired and re-plumbed the docks. Keep an eye on the LCYC web-site for additional opportunities. Even after Workday there will be special projects where members can pitch in to keep the club humming, affordable, and affable. From the Docks Guy, Mike Barker........Photos

5/8/05.... Awning goes up in perfect conditions...from Bette Reuter.  I want to thank everyone so much for joining me to put up the East and South awnings yesterday. We could not have picked a finer day to do it -- no wind and mostly sunny skies (unlike Sunday the 8th). It really helped to have a relief team: Mike and Laura Dunphy who stepped in after Bob and Mark had to leave. Young Jack even pitched in, but was happiest when we were done. We wrapped up just after 2pm; not quite as fast as the prior teams that include Ernie. But we figured it out and got it done....FYI, Ernie will hang the corner piece when he returns this week. Thank-you all, and a round of applause to the core team of Mark Sperry, Bob Turnau, Bob Platt, Judy Bond, Joss & Jack Besse and myself.

4/23//05....Calling All Moorings By Steve landau - Harbormaster

The ice  out and our club diver is getting organized to start on our mooring field. For those who took their mooring floats and pennants home for the winter  - it's time to cart them back. Please be sure your name and mooring # are permanently painted on the float.
When placing gear back on the lawn try to spot your relative position in the line up. It is organized by mooring field row - if you can't spot you place just leave it by the shed. The sooner gear is back the sooner the diver can begin work. All gear must be back by May 1st to avoid incurring extra cost to the club or yourself..
Any gear requiring repairs will be corrected and billed to the owner.. Members will be notified if anything significant is required. Worn pennants will not be installed. Our diver Pierre LaRocque is expert on LCYC mooring standards and he will supply first quality Chicago (US made) hardware and handmade pennants at better than competitive prices. You may contact him at 233-1479 or pierrer@champlaindivers.com

1/26/05.....Dave Schaefer continues to sweat and grunt over his computer, most recently for the biker-style cruiser magazine, "Latitudes and Attitudes". Recent efforts are a profile of the Tallship Unicorn in the November issue, and a piece in the January issue on Reedville, VA, a cruiser destination on the Chesapeake. Unicorn is a PR client of Dave's, which gives him a chance to sneak away to boat shows. In November, "Latitudes and Attitudes" publisher Bob Bitchin hosted his advertiser aboard Unicorn at the St. Pete's Boat show. This one did not end in fist fights, as did the general beer party for L&A readers the next night.

8/31/03.....Spectacular Conditions for Etchells Practice Races........A half-dozen Etchells showed up for what turned out to be a fabulous day of racing with sunny conditions and winds around 10 knots. The fleet got in five races in just three hours, sailing short, windward-leeward courses. Ernie Reuter, skippering Mango Challenge, won the first race, and since these were practice races that don't count toward the series championship, we all assumed Ernie would win the rest of the races. However, other race winners included Joss Besse, skippering Ruffian and Rick Stevens on Rascal. Ray Harrington was guest skipper aboard Dave Powlison's Pied Piper, and won a race, and Dave skippered Pied Piper to a first in the final race of the day. Meredith Powlison, also aboard Pied Piper, skippered their boat to a fourth-place finish in her first time at the helm for an entire race. Thanks go to Gene Cloutier, his father, and Jesse for running some great races!

6/21/03...Etchells On-the-Water Clinic... Eight Etchells from Lake Champlain Fleet 25 took advantage of a rare opportunity to receive a Saturday of on the water coaching from one of the great sailors in the world of Etchells sailing, Jud Smith.  Jud has won the Etchells North Americans several times, and most recently the Jaguar Series—a three-event midwinter championship.   The fleet spent four hours sailing a number of short, windward-leeward courses on June 21, while Jud offered advice and suggestions from the LCYC inflatable.  Midway through the session, he rotated through the fleet, sailing aboard almost every boat and again offering his help.  Jud works for Doyle Sails in Marblehead, Mass. Ernie Reuter won the award for the most races won that don’t count.  Senior Moment earned a certificate for a discount at a local fiberglass repair shop, and inflatable driver Bob Penniman earned the “most information gathered” award.  It was a fabulous learning experience for all who participated.

4/9/03....The International Etchells Class has a new link. Bookmark it at www.etchells.org

9/27/02.......And the winner is ........USA 478 sailed by Dave Powlison and crew. See the complete Overall Summer 2002 fleet results.  Another great summer of racing on Lake Champlain with newcomers Goodwin and Greig showing promise at the end of the season while Howell and company had some great races this summer. Our fleet already shows signs of additional growth for the summer of 2003. Next fleet meeting will be coming up.

9/15/02......The Etchells fleet experienced one of the most spectacular Saturdays yet, with south winds around 10 knots to start with and building to around 20.  Eight boats participated, and the fleet sailed three races in the bay, from the Shipyard mark to the Club mark. In the first race, Mango Challenge squeaked out a win over the Rascal crew, riding in a puff to slide into the lead right at the finish of the windward-leeward course. The second race was a double-windward leeward.  Hot Chocolate and Pied Piper dueled for the lead all the way up to the second windward mark rounding where Hot Chocolate moved ahead and went on to win. In the final race, a windward-leeward-windward, Pied Piper took the lead early on and never looked back, with Rascal finishing in second. Kudos go to Mango Challenge crew Steve Walkerman, who noticed a large (probably 75-80% of the way through) crack in Mango's mast at deck level, just as they were about to finish the second race.  They quickly doused the spinnaker, finished, the dropped the main and jury-rigged a system to keep the mast up until they made it back to LCYC.  Thanks also to Don Rathbone and his crew aboard Maverick who provided the fleet with some excellent races.

7/15/02.......If you missed this one, you missed one of the best!  Sunny skies,
temperatures in the upper 70s and winds that started around 15 and, over
the course of the racing, dropped to around 5-10.  Eight boats turned
out for three double-windward-leeward races, and since the wind was not
as strong as we thought it would be, we sailed in the bay, from the
Shipyard mark to the Club mark, which turned out to be the right
decision in the slowly dropping breeze.  By the time we got back to the
club, the bay was pretty flat.
The big news is that, after a brief hiatus from the front of the
pack, Mango Challenge is back.  In the second race, Ernie & crew led
until just after the final weather mark, where they lost the lead to
Pied Piper.  But in the final race, they put the throttle down at the
start and were never challenged.  Ruffian also made some appearances in
the top of the fleet.  Nice going, crews!
Special thanks to Charlie Lord and Bob Dunn who were our race
committee.  This year, Charlie has been RC for every (yes, every)
weekend race the club has hosted--volunteerism at its best.  Bob hopped
aboard aboard at the last minute to fill an unexpected vacancy.  They
had some mechanical difficulties that kept them from setting up a
perfectly square line for the second two races, but everything still
worked out.  Thanks again, Charlie and Bob!
........From Dave Powlison on US 478

5/22/02.....Launch Day 2002 was a bit cool but we got 7 7/8 boats in at the the sailing center. Castle,Lampman and Boynton got the mast up but ran out of time. They are always first anyway so last on this one is OK.......Photos

5/16/02.......Thanks to Reid Krakower for his generous contribution to the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center in the name of Etchells Fleet 25.  A new 3Ton hoist is being secured today to replace the old 2Toner that will now be retired as a spare.
