 Created in 1977 in memory of Dewitt E. Mead, a member who died in 1976 while scuba diving to tend to his mooring at his home in Charlotte. Dewey had raced in Class D, so this trophy was originally for that class. Reconfiguration of the classes in 1993 eliminated that class and idled the trophy. Later, growth in non-spinnaker racing created a need for a second Jib&Main trophy, and in 1999 the Mead trophy became the perfect solution.
