LCYC 2005 Junior Sailing Program

February 15, 2005

Dear Parent:

In order for your son or daughter to participate in the Lake Champlain Yacht Club Sailing Program it is mandatory that all students wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket at all times and pass a basic swim test  It is also required that you have provided us with a signed confidential medical emergency form and waiver of claims.   Please accompany your son or daughter to the first day of class. Since the swim test may be stressful for some children, especially the younger child, we encourage you to be present to offer any guidance or support. Each student must be able to demonstrate the following skills in the water:

1.        Swim unaided approximately 1 pool length and back.  (The student will swim from the junior sailing dock to a buoy and back to the dock.)

2.        Tread water unaided for 3 minutes.

3.        After 3 minutes, while still in the water, the student must put on his or her life jacket and fasten it.

4.        With the life jacket secured, the students must swim back to the buoy and return to the dock.

These requirements are absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of your son or daughter.  It is important that your child feel comfortable in the water.  One of the first techniques he or she will learn is to capsize the boat and right it in the water.  All of these skills are important so that your child we feel confident and successful in the sailing program.

We also recommend that your son or daughter daily bring the following items:

            1.        Any type of shoe that offers protection around the toes.

2.        A towel, sun block and sunglasses.

3.        Drinking water and a snack  (There is a vending machine at the club that sells soda.)

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY:  Sailing is an outdoor water sport and therefore highly dependent on appropriate sailing weather that is beyond our control.  There may be days with no wind, or days with too much wind.  There may be days that are very cold and rainy.  It is our policy to sail when it poses no safety hazards to the children.  Also, your son or daughter needs to be dressed appropriately for the weather, be it hot and sunny, rainy or chilly.  On those days that we do not sail, our instructors will have various activities prepared for the children.  At times there may be videos that are sailing related for them to watch.  Watching videos will usually be limited to those days that the classes are confined to the clubhouse because of bad weather.

Our instructors are always available to discuss with you any concerns you may have.

I hope this information is helpful to you and your child in getting ready to have a wonderful sailing experience at the Lake Champlain Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program.  Please contact me at 864-1920 if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely yours,

Barbara Robitaille
